It is May, the weather is good and everything is happening out there! Here are a couple of shots taken on Thursday 12th May at Barnack Hills & Holes NNR.
We have had various requests for something more practical and hands-on from the club. So if you would like to visit some of the local sites but don't know where to go, I am happy to take small groups or individuals and show them some of my favourite spots.
Suggestions:
- Barnack Hills & Holes, Upwood Meadows for flowers and butterflies
- Woodwalton Fen for dragonflies
- Old Sulehay, Bedford Purlieus for woodland flowers, butterflies, etc.
Obviously depends on weather and availability and I cannot guarantee to be able to find particular species - wildlife is not that predictable! Anyway, if you are interested, get in touch.
Today (Tuesday 17th May) I went to Stonepit Quarry at Old Sulehay to photograph Dingy and Grizzled Skippers and managed to find both - only a couple of sightings of Grizzled, but quite a lot of Dingy.
I too have visited Ring Haw which is part of the Old Sulehay complex and seen a lot of Dingy Skippers and a couple of Grizzled Skippers. This year seems to be a good one for Holly Blues as I regularly get a couple around my garden. The other place I have visited recently is Upwood Meadows which is most famous for its show of Green Winged Orchids. PS Stuart. That is a nice snap of the mating Dingy Skippers.

Woodwalton fen is plagued out with Scarce Chasers at the moment, and a good number of Hairy Dragonflies are about as well.
